Solution

David Rosenhan described in his study "On Being Sane in Insane Places" that researchers posing as "pseudo-patients" in a mental hospital but otherwise acting normally were treated as mentally ill by the hospital staff. This experiment was conducted to test the reliability of psychiatric diagnoses. The pseudo-patients, who included Rosenhan himself, reported hallucinations as their only symptom to get admitted to the hospital. Once admitted, they acted normally and told staff that they felt fine and had no more symptoms. Despite this, all were forced to admit to having a mental illness and agree to take antipsychotic drugs as a condition of their release. The average stay was 19 days, and all but one were diagnosed with schizophrenia "in remission" before their release. This study highlighted the potential flaws and biases in psychiatric diagnosis.
