Fungi and bacteria are the main decomposers in many ecosystems; they break down substances into simpler forms that can be easily absorbed by plants.

All parts of an ecosystem are essential and need to work together because they are interconnected. The energy flows from one trophic level (or level of the food chain) to the next. Producers form the base of the food chain, consumers eat the producers, and decomposers break down dead or decaying organisms, returning nutrients to the soil, which helps the producers to grow.

If one part of this system were to fail, it could have a domino effect on the rest of the ecosystem. For example, if all the producers were to die, the consumers would have no food and would also die. This would leave the decomposers with nothing to decompose, disrupting the nutrient cycle.

Therefore, the balance of an ecosystem is crucial for the survival and health of all organisms within it. Changes in one part of the ecosystem can cause changes in other parts of the ecosystem, potentially leading to the collapse of the entire system.
