For most of its 44-year history, the USPS turned a profit and was financially self-sufficient (Gattuso). Americans relied heavily on the USPS to send and receive invitations, birthday greetings, legal notices, bills, checks, and even love letters.     However, this all changed in 2007. Starting in 2007, a dramatic drop in demand sent the USPS over a financial cliff.
