Competitive and non-competitive inhibitors are two types of enzyme inhibitors that differ in their mechanism of action and their effects on enzyme activity.

1. Competitive Inhibitors:

   • Competitive inhibitors are molecules that are similar in structure to the substrate of an enzyme.
   • They compete with the substrate for the active site of the enzyme.
   • They bind to the active site, preventing the substrate from binding and thus inhibiting the enzyme's function.
   • The inhibition can be overcome by increasing the concentration of the substrate.
   • The presence of a competitive inhibitor does not change the maximum rate (Vmax) of the enzyme reaction, but it does increase the amount of substrate needed to achieve half the maximum rate (Km).

2. Non-competitive Inhibitors:

   • Non-competitive inhibitors do not compete with the substrate for the active site. Instead, they bind to a different part of the enzyme, called the allosteric site.
   • This binding changes the shape of the enzyme, making the active site less effective at catalyzing the reaction with the substrate.
   • Non-competitive inhibitors affect the enzyme whether the substrate is present or not.
   • The presence of a non-competitive inhibitor decreases the maximum rate (Vmax) of the enzyme reaction, but it does not change the amount of substrate needed to achieve half the maximum rate (Km).

In summary, competitive inhibitors work by directly competing with the substrate for the active site, while non-competitive inhibitors work by changing the shape of the enzyme and making it less effective.
