What was Collectivization, and why was Ukraine targeted?

Collectivization was a policy implemented by Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The goal was to consolidate individual land and labour into collective farms (kolkhozes and sovkhozes). The process aimed to increase agricultural productivity and support the rapidly industrializing country.

The reasons why Ukraine was targeted for collectivization are complex and multifaceted. Here are a few key reasons:

1. Economic: Ukraine was known as the "breadbasket of Europe" due to its fertile soil and successful agricultural industry. By collectivizing the farms in Ukraine, the Soviet government aimed to control this vital resource.

2. Political: Collectivization was also a tool for the Soviet government to exert control over the Ukrainian population and suppress any nationalist or anti-Soviet sentiments. By controlling the food supply, the government could effectively control the people.
