A molecule that reacts with a particular enzyme

A molecule that reacts with a particular enzyme is known as a substrate. The enzyme binds to the substrate, forming an enzyme-substrate complex. This process often results in the substrate being broken down into its component parts, a process known as catalysis. The enzyme is then free to bind with another substrate molecule and repeat the process. This is the basic mechanism of enzyme action.
