Solution

a) Survivorship Curves [8 marks] Survivorship curves are graphical representations of the number of individuals in a population that survive at each age. There are three types of survivorship curves: Type I, Type II, and Type III. Type I curves are characterized by high survival rates for the young, with a sharp decrease in survival in old age. This is typical for many large mammals, including humans. Type II curves represent a constant death rate over the organism's lifespan. Birds often exhibit this type of curve. Type III curves are characterized by a high death rate early in life with fewer individuals reaching adulthood. This is common in many fish and insect species.

b) Logistic Model of Growth [8 marks] The logistic model of growth describes a population's growth slowing or stopping following a period of exponential growth, at the population's carrying capacity. The carrying capacity (K) is the maximum population size that can be supported by the available resources. The logistic growth model is represented by the equation dN/dt = rN(1 - N/K), where N is the population size, r is the maximum per capita growth rate, and K is the carrying capacity.

c) Character Displacement [8 marks] Character displacement is an evolutionary phenomenon where differences among similar species whose distributions overlap geographically are accentuated in regions where the species co-occur but are minimized or lost where the species’ distributions do not overlap. This pattern results from evolutionary change driven by biological competition among species for a limited resource (food, space, etc.).

d) Uniform Dispersion [4 marks] Uniform dispersion, also known as uniform distribution, refers to a distribution pattern where individuals of a population are evenly spaced throughout their geographic location. This pattern can occur due to social interactions such as territoriality, or due to interactions with the physical environment.

e) Mutualism [4 marks] Mutualism is a type of symbiotic relationship where both species involved benefit. This can be in the form of protection, transportation, food, or other resources. An example of mutualism is the relationship between bees and flowers, where bees get nectar from the flowers, and in return, the bees pollinate the flowers.

f) Batesian Mimicry [3 marks] Batesian mimicry is a form of mimicry where a harmless species has evolved to imitate the warning signals of a harmful species directed at a predator of them both. It is named after the English naturalist H.W. Bates. An example of this is the viceroy butterfly (harmless) mimicking the monarch butterfly (poisonous).
