Why didn't the crusades start earlier?

The Crusades didn't start earlier due to several reasons:

1. Lack of Papal Authority: The Pope didn't have the same level of influence and control over European monarchs and their armies in the early Middle Ages as he did by the 11th century. The concept of a Pope-led holy war against non-Christians was not yet fully developed.

2. Fragmented Europe: Europe was highly fragmented during the early Middle Ages, with numerous small kingdoms and territories often at war with each other. This made it difficult to organize a large-scale expedition like the Crusades.

3. Muslim Strength: The Muslim world, particularly the Seljuk Turks, was very powerful during the early Middle Ages. It wasn't until the late 11th century, when the Byzantine Empire started losing territory to the Turks, that the Pope called for the First Crusade.

4. Lack of Motivation: There was not a strong motivation for the Crusades until the late 11th century. The idea of retaking the Holy Land from the Muslims became a powerful motivating factor only after the Church and secular leaders promoted it as a holy duty.

5. Economic Factors: The economic resources needed to wage a long-distance war like the Crusades were not available in the early Middle Ages. It was only after Europe's economy started to grow and stabilize that such an expedition became feasible.

6. Technological Limitations: The technology and logistics required to transport and sustain large armies over long distances were not yet fully developed in the early Middle Ages. These capabilities evolved over time, making the Crusades possible by the late 11th century.
