Solution

The cochlea, which is part of the inner ear, is responsible for converting sound vibrations into nerve impulses that can be interpreted by the brain. The cochlea is shaped like a snail shell and is filled with fluid. When sound vibrations enter the cochlea, they cause the fluid to move, which in turn moves tiny hair cells. These hair cells then send signals to the brain.

The reason the apex of the cochlea is more sensitive to low frequency sounds has to do with how sound waves travel through the cochlea. High frequency sounds do not travel as far into the cochlea and therefore stimulate hair cells near the base. Low frequency sounds, on the other hand, travel further into the cochlea and stimulate hair cells near the apex.

This is known as the tonotopic organization of the cochlea, where different frequencies stimulate different parts of the cochlea. This allows us to distinguish between different pitches and tones, and is a crucial part of how we perceive and interpret sound.
