Solution

The situation I am going to discuss took place in an academic setting. One of my classmates was struggling with a particular assignment and another classmate, who had already completed the assignment, offered to share their work. The struggling student was tempted as the deadline was approaching, but he chose an ethical course of action. He thanked his classmate for the offer but declined, stating that it would not be fair to others and it would not help him learn.

The decision was based on the ethical principle of fairness and integrity. He believed that using someone else's work would not only be unfair to the rest of the class who were doing their assignments on their own, but it would also be a breach of academic integrity. He also considered the long-term impact of such actions on his learning and decided that it would be more beneficial to struggle and learn rather than take the easy way out.

The impact of his decision was positive. Although he had to spend more time on the assignment, he was able to understand the concepts better and this helped him in the final exam. His decision also earned him the respect of his peers and teachers. This incident reinforced the importance of ethics in everyday decisions and the long-term benefits of such actions.

Now, I will visit the discussion forums and comment on the posts of other learners, applying what I've learned from this incident.

Consider the phrase “ethical action.” How has your understanding of this term been influenced by the seminars and tasks completed as part of the Giving Voice to Values course? Was there a particular “Aha!-moment”? [The writing should not be a narration of the content covered in class each week, rather a personal reflection on the evolution of your own thinking and understanding of the topics.]PreviousNext

One of the most important lessons I learned from the course is that ethical action often requires us to balance competing values. For example, we may value both honesty and loyalty, but what if we are faced with a situation where we have to choose between the two? The course taught me that there is no easy answer to such questions, and that ethical action often requires us to make difficult choices.
