Solution

The reaction between acetaldehyde and propanal is a cross-aldol condensation. In this reaction, acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) and propanal (CH3CH2CHO) can react in four different ways to form four different products.

  1. Acetaldehyde can react with itself. This will form 3-hydroxybutanal, also known as aldol.

  2. Propanal can react with itself. This will form 4-hydroxypentanal.

  3. Acetaldehyde can react with propanal. This will form 2-methyl-3-hydroxybutanal.

  4. Propanal can react with acetaldehyde. This will form 3-methyl-3-hydroxybutanal.

So, the four possible products are 3-hydroxybutanal, 4-hydroxypentanal, 2-methyl-3-hydroxybutanal, and 3-methyl-3-hydroxybutanal.
