Blood flow through the heart begins when deoxygenated blood from the body enters the heart through the superior and inferior vena cava. This blood is then directed into the right atrium, the first chamber of the heart. From the right atrium, the blood flows through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. The right ventricle then pumps the blood through the pulmonary valve and into the pulmonary artery, which carries the blood to the lungs to be oxygenated.
The oxygenated blood from the lungs then returns to the heart through the pulmonary veins, entering the left atrium, the second chamber of the heart. From the left atrium, the blood flows through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. The left ventricle then pumps the blood through the aortic valve and into the aorta, which distributes the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
The coronary sinus, which collects deoxygenated blood from the heart muscle itself, also empties into the right atrium. This blood then follows the same path through the right side of the heart, to the lungs for oxygenation, and back to the left side of the heart to be pumped to the rest of the body.
