Solution

Solomon deviated from his devotion to God in two main ways:

  1. Idolatry: Solomon was led astray by his foreign wives, who worshipped other gods. Despite God's clear command to the Israelites not to intermarry with other nations (to prevent them from being led astray to serve other gods), Solomon married many foreign women who turned his heart after other gods. His wives influenced him to build high places for sacrificing to their gods, which was a direct violation of God's law.

  2. Accumulation of Wealth and Power: Solomon also violated God's law by accumulating excessive wealth and power. He amassed a large amount of gold and silver, and built a formidable army with numerous horses and chariots. This was against God's command in Deuteronomy 17:16-17, where the king was instructed not to multiply horses for himself, nor shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

These deviations led to Solomon's downfall and the eventual division of the Kingdom of Israel.
