Solution

When light enters a prism, it undergoes a process called dispersion. This is the splitting of white light into its constituent colors, which is why we see a rainbow of colors exiting a prism when white light enters it.

Step 1: Light enters the prism As light hits the surface of the prism, it slows down and bends a process known as refraction. The degree to which the light bends depends on the angle at which the light hits the surface and the refractive index of the material of the prism.

Step 2: Dispersion of light Once inside the prism, the light beam splits into its constituent colors because each color of light has a different wavelength and each wavelength is refracted by a different amount. Red light is refracted the least and violet light is refracted the most.

Step 3: Light exits the prism As the different colors of light exit the prism, they are refracted again, causing them to spread out even more. This is why we see a spectrum of colors coming out of the prism.

The reason the light exiting the prism is less bright than the beam of light that entered the prism is because the light has been spread out. Each color of light is less bright than the original beam of white light because the energy of the light has been distributed among the different colors. Additionally, some light is also reflected off the surfaces of the prism and absorbed by the material of the prism, which further decreases the brightness of the light exiting the prism.
