Fact File: Tiger Conservation in India

  1. Sub-species of Tigers Found:

    • Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)
    • Indochinese Tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti)
    • Malayan Tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni)
    • Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica)
    • South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis)
    • Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae)
  2. Natural Habitat: Tigers in India are found in various types of forests including rainforests, grasslands, savannas and even mangrove swamps. The Bengal Tiger is the most common and lives in many of India's national parks.

  3. Threats: The major threats to tigers in India include habitat loss due to deforestation and urbanization, poaching for their fur and body parts, and reduction in prey base due to hunting.

  4. Conservation Efforts: The Indian government has taken several steps to conserve tigers. The Project Tiger, launched in 1973, is aimed at preserving the habitats of tigers and protecting them from extinction. There are now 50 tiger reserves in India under this project. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was established in 2005 for strengthening tiger conservation.

  5. Protection Status: Tigers are listed as 'Endangered' on the IUCN Red List. In India, they are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

For the scrapbook, you can collect pictures of different subspecies of tigers, their habitats, pictures showing threats to their existence, and pictures related to conservation efforts like tiger reserves, anti-poaching patrols, etc. You can also include pictures of the logos or emblems of Project Tiger and NTCA.

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.Nepal is the first country to double its tiger populationNepal started its fourth tiger and prey survey from December of last year under the lead of theDepartment of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation( DNPWC) and the Department ofForest and Soil Conservation ( DoFSC) of the Ministry of Forests and Environment. Periodicassessments of tigers have been conducted at intervals of four years since 2009. The first, second, and third nationwide assessments were carried out respectively.“The latest tiger population in Nepal is nearly three times compared to figures we had in 2009-2010, which is nothing short of historical,” remarks Dr. Chiranjibi P. Pokarel, the National Trustfor Nature Conservation’s tiger expert. “Tigers are apex predators right at the top of the foodchain, and their populations are intricately linked to the health of ecosystems and forests, so thisis undoubtedly big news for wildlife conservation as a whole.”Only a century ago, some 100,000 tigers were estimated to roam the wide landscapes of Asia.By 2010, their population in the wild had drastically dropped by 97%, to about 3200, mostly dueto severe habitat loss and poaching. As a response, the world’s 13 tiger-range countries, including Nepal, had pledged to double their tiger population by 2022(TX2) through endorsingthe 2010 St. Petersburg declaration in Russia. Since then, all tiger range countries, includingNepal have taken important steps to achieve TX2.Since the 2010 declaration to save tigers from the threat of extinction, there have beenimportant initiatives made in Nepal at all levels. During this period, additional habitats for tigersand prey species have been secured, namely with the establishment of Banke National Parkand extension of Parsa National Park.Nepal’s tiger conservation success will have to be backed by good science that is able to drivepolicy and action. The planning, construction, and development works need to be wild-lifefriendly. Write a paragraph on India’s National Aquatic animal (60-80 words)

Some animals are endangered. Animals become endangered when they are threatened by changing environmental conditions or by hunting, or when they have simply become very few in number. Tigers are some of the most endangered animals in the world. They have a high risk of becoming extinct. If tigers become extinct, this means they will no longer exist; they will have been completely wiped out. There are only about 3000 tigers now in the wild, and that number is shrinking. Many people are passionate about saving the tiger, but they disagree about the best way to do so.Some people argue that in this urgent situation, the only thing we should focus on is preventing hunters from killing tigers. They compare the situation to an emergency room. If a bleeding person comes into the emergency room, the doctor does not say, “How did this person get here? How can we keep this from happening again?” The doctor fixes the wounds first and asks questions later. These people argue that tigers are in the emergency room. There is no time to do research or try a broad approach to help them. Instead, we should focus all money and efforts on law enforcement to prevent people from hunting tigers illegally. Later, when the tiger population has stabilized and is no longer shrinking, there will be time to focus on education campaigns and research.Others disagree, saying that while law enforcement is important, it is equally important to address the causes of the problem. Factors such as the medicine trade for tiger parts and the high price of tiger skins motivate people to keep hunting tigers. If we want people to agree to stop killing tigers, we must educate them about the very real possibility that one day there will be no tigers left. To return to the emergency room comparison, the doctor may treat wounds first, but if no one asks questions about how someone got hurt or tries to change that person’s behavior, the injury can happen again and again. If we really want to end the illegal hunting of tigers, we must do more than just arrest hunters. We must also convince them to join the fight to save the tigers.Rehm, Diane. “Concerns over the Endangered Tiger Population.” The Diane Rehm Show. 12 Dec. 2011. NPR. : She explains an animal that roams in the jungle and belongs to a royal clan. The colour of its skin is yellowish with black stripes. She says that if you notice that he kills you and eats you up, then this means that you have surely seen a Bengal Tiger. This time also she has used dark humour to explain how a tiger looks like because once a person has been eaten up by a wild animal, there is no use in determining which wild animal it is.
