Solution

When a little salt is added to pure water, the melting point will decrease and the boiling point will increase. This is due to the fact that salt disrupts the equilibrium of the water molecules, requiring more energy (higher temperature) to change from liquid to gas, thus raising the boiling point. Conversely, the addition of salt also lowers the temperature at which water freezes, effectively lowering the melting point.

Heat is added to ice at 0°C. Explain why the temperature of the ice does not change. What does change? The additional heat causes the kinetic energy of some of the ice molecules to so they can more readily undergo the phase change to liquid. Therefore, the temperature of the ice remains constant. Since some of the ice changes to liquid water, the amount of ice .
