Solution

  1. The Rutherford model couldn't explain the stability of an atom: According to classical electromagnetic theory, a charged particle moving in a circular orbit would undergo acceleration. During acceleration, charged particles would emit energy. So, if an electron did move in a circular orbit, it would lose energy and eventually spiral into the nucleus. This would make the atom highly unstable. However, atoms are known to be stable entities.

  2. The Rutherford model couldn't explain the line spectrum of hydrogen: The model doesn't explain the discrete line spectra of elements. According to classical theory, an accelerating electron would emit electromagnetic radiation of all frequencies, leading to a continuous spectrum. However, the observed spectrum of hydrogen is a line spectrum, which is discrete. This discrepancy couldn't be explained by Rutherford's model.
