Solution

  1. First, open your Excel spreadsheet and locate cell D2.

  2. Click on cell D2 to make it active. This is where you will edit the formula.

  3. In the formula bar at the top, you will see the current formula in cell D2. It should look something like this: "=C2+B9".

  4. To make the reference to cell C2 relative (so it will update when copied), you don't need to change anything. Excel treats cell references as relative by default.

  5. To make the reference to cell B9 absolute (so it will remain constant when copied), you need to add dollar signs before the column letter and row number. Change "B9" to "BB9". The formula should now look like this: "=C2+BB9".

  6. Press Enter to save the changes to the formula.

  7. Now, to copy this formula to cells D3:D6, click on cell D2 again to make it active.

  8. Move your cursor to the bottom right corner of the cell until it changes to a small black cross. This is the AutoFill handle.

  9. Click and drag the AutoFill handle down to cell D6. Release the mouse button to drop the formula into cells D3:D6.

  10. The formula in cells D3:D6 should now reference the corresponding cell in column C (updating for each row), and cell B9 (remaining constant).
