Solution

India, being a vast and geographically diverse country, is prone to various types of disasters. These can be broadly categorized into two types: Natural Disasters and Man-made Disasters.

  1. Natural Disasters: These are disasters caused by natural phenomena and include:

    a. Earthquakes: India is divided into four seismic zones, and hence, is prone to earthquakes. The North-Eastern states and the Himalayan region are particularly vulnerable.

    b. Floods: Due to the monsoon season, many parts of India, especially the coastal regions and the Gangetic plains, are susceptible to floods.

    c. Cyclones: The coastal regions of India, particularly the Eastern coast, are prone to cyclones.

    d. Droughts: Parts of Western and Southern India often face drought conditions due to inadequate rainfall.

    e. Landslides: The hilly regions, especially the Himalayan range, are prone to landslides, particularly during the monsoons.

  2. Man-made Disasters: These are disasters caused due to human activities and include:

    a. Industrial Accidents: These include accidents in factories, mines, etc., leading to loss of life and property.

    b. Fires: These can occur in any part of the country and can cause extensive damage.

    c. Chemical and Nuclear Disasters: These include chemical leaks, nuclear radiation leaks, etc. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is an example of a chemical disaster.

    d. Biological Disasters: These include epidemics, pandemics, etc. The recent COVID-19 pandemic is an example of a biological disaster.

    e. Terrorism: India has also been a victim of various terrorist attacks, which can be categorized as man-made disasters.

These are some of the major types of disasters that India faces. Each of these disasters requires a specific type of preparedness and response mechanism.
