Solution

Electrolytic refining is a process used to extract pure metal from impure metal. This process is also known as electrorefining. Here are the steps involved in electrolytic refining:

  1. An electrolyte is prepared: The electrolyte is a solution of the metal salt of the metal being refined. For example, if copper is being refined, the electrolyte would be a solution of copper sulfate.

  2. Electrodes are prepared: Two electrodes are used in electrolytic refining - a positive electrode (anode) and a negative electrode (cathode). The anode is made from the impure metal that is to be refined. The cathode is usually made from a very pure form of the metal.

  3. The electrodes are immersed in the electrolyte: The anode and cathode are both immersed in the electrolyte and an electric current is passed through the solution.

  4. Metal ions migrate to the cathode: When the electric current is passed through the solution, metal ions from the anode dissolve in the electrolyte and migrate towards the cathode.

  5. Deposition of pure metal on the cathode: The metal ions gain electrons at the cathode and are deposited as pure metal.

  6. Impurities are left behind: The impurities in the metal do not dissolve in the electrolyte and are left behind at the anode. These are often collected and processed to extract any valuable metals.

This process is used in refining metals like copper, nickel, tin, and zinc.

Ans. (a) Electrolytic refining is used for metals like Cu, Zn, Ag, Au etc. The method to be used for refining an impure metal depends on the nature of the i as well as on the nature of impurities present in it. So, metals Au (gold) and Cu (copper) are refined by electrolytic refining.
