Jatin and Sonia are driving towards each other on a straight road. Jatin drives at a constant speed of 80 kilometres per hour, while Sonia drives at a constant speed of 60 kilometres per hour. They start from locations that are 200 kilometres apart. A bird sitting on Jatin's car starts flying towards Sonia's car once they start driving and continues to fly back and forth between the cars until they meet. If the bird flies at a constant speed of 90 kilometres per hour, how far does the bird fly before Jatin and Sonia meet?

Solution

First, we need to find out how long it takes for Jatin and Sonia to meet. They are driving towards each other at a combined speed of 80 km/h + 60 km/h = 140 km/h. The distance between them is 200 km, so the time it takes for them to meet is 200 km / 140 km/h = 1.43 hours (rounded to two decimal places).

The bird is flying at a constant speed of 90 km/h for the entire time that Jatin and Sonia are driving towards each other. So, the distance that the bird flies is its speed multiplied by the time it is flying.

Therefore, the bird flies 90 km/h * 1.43 hours = 128.57 km (rounded to two decimal places) before Jatin and Sonia meet.
