Solution

During inspiration, or the process of inhaling, the size of the chest cavity increases due to several physiological changes:

  1. Diaphragm contraction: The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. When you inhale, this muscle contracts and moves downward. This increases the vertical space in the chest cavity, allowing the lungs to expand.

  2. Intercostal muscle contraction: The intercostal muscles are located between the ribs. When you inhale, these muscles contract, causing the ribs to move upward and outward. This increases the space in the chest cavity in the anteroposterior and lateral dimensions.

  3. Lung expansion: As the space in the chest cavity increases, the lungs expand to fill the space. This is facilitated by the pleural cavity, a potential space between the lungs and the chest wall that contains a small amount of fluid. The fluid creates a surface tension that keeps the lungs close to the chest wall, allowing them to expand as the chest cavity increases in size.

  4. Decrease in air pressure: As the lungs expand, the air pressure inside the lungs decreases. This creates a pressure gradient between the air inside the lungs and the air outside the body. Due to this pressure gradient, air rushes into the lungs, causing further expansion.

These combined actions result in an increase in the size of the chest cavity during inspiration, allowing us to take in air and oxygenate our bodies.
