Solution

In Freud's psychosexual development theory, there are five fixed stages. These are:

  1. Oral Stage: This is the first stage of Freud's psychosexual development stages, occurring from birth to 1 year. The primary source of interaction occurs through the mouth, so the infant gains pleasure from oral stimulation through gratifying activities such as tasting and sucking.

  2. Anal Stage: The second stage occurs between 1 and 3 years of age. The child now becomes aware of their anal region as a source of pleasure. They start to gain pleasure from holding and expelling feces.

  3. Phallic Stage: This stage occurs between the ages of 3 and 6. The pleasure zone switches to the genitals. Freud believed that during this stage boy develop unconscious sexual desires for their mother and jealousy and rivalry with their father, a complex Freud termed the Oedipus complex. Meanwhile, girls develop an Electra complex, which is a sexual attraction towards their father.

  4. Latency Stage: This stage occurs from age 6 to puberty. It's a period of sexual calm. Interest in sexuality is suppressed and children focus on other aspects of life such as school, friendships, hobbies, and sports.

  5. Genital Stage: This is the final stage of psychosexual development that begins at puberty. If the other stages have been completed successfully, the individual develops into a well-balanced, warm, and caring adult.
