Stages of wound healing

Wound healing is a complex process that occurs in the body with a series of steps that include:

1. Hemostasis Phase: This is the first phase that occurs immediately after the injury. The body activates its emergency repair system, the blood vessels constrict and clotting begins to prevent excessive bleeding. Platelets aggregate at the site and release chemicals that form a clot and halt bleeding.

2. Inflammatory Phase: This phase begins soon after the injury. White blood cells, including neutrophils and macrophages, arrive at the wound to kill bacteria, remove debris, and release growth factors needed for healing. This phase is characterized by symptoms of inflammation: redness, heat, swelling, and pain.

3. Proliferative Phase: This phase involves the growth of new tissue to replace the damaged one. Fibroblasts produce collagen, which forms connective skin tissue to replace the fibrin in the clot. New blood vessels form to supply the area with blood. The wound contracts as new tissues are built.

4. Maturation Phase: This is the final phase where the wound fully closes. Collagen is remodeled and the wound fully contracts. This phase can last for several months. The new tissue slowly gains strength and flexibility.

Each stage of wound healing is crucial for the next one to occur, and disruption in any stage can lead to improper or impaired wound healing.
