Solution

Structural Adaptations:

  1. Koalas have sharp claws which help them to climb and live in trees.
  2. They have a thick and woolly fur which protects them from both high and low temperatures and also acts as a waterproof layer during rain.
  3. Their fur is also in a color that helps them to camouflage in the trees.
  4. They have a broad nose that has a strong sense of smell to detect the types of eucalyptus leaves they can eat.
  5. Koalas have a pouch for carrying their young ones.
  6. They have a slow metabolic rate due to their diet of eucalyptus leaves, which are low in nutrition.

Behavioural Adaptations:

  1. Koalas are nocturnal and spend their day sleeping. This helps them to conserve energy.
  2. They are solitary animals and maintain their territory, which reduces competition for food resources.
  3. They eat a diet that consists almost entirely of eucalyptus leaves. They are very selective about the types of eucalyptus leaves they eat.

Classification:

  1. Kingdom: Animalia
  2. Phylum: Chordata
  3. Class: Mammalia
  4. Order: Diprotodontia
  5. Family: Phascolarctidae
  6. Genus: Phascolarctos
  7. Species: P. cinereus
