Solution

In carbonate hardness, the cations are usually calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+). These are the two most common cations associated with hardness in water, and they become problematic when they react with carbonate (CO3 2-) and bicarbonate (HCO3 -) anions to form insoluble compounds. These compounds can cause scale build-up in pipes and boilers, and can also interfere with the cleaning action of soap and detergents.
