Solution

The organic compound [A] is Benzaldehyde. It has a characteristic odour and reacts with concentrated NaOH to give two compounds [B] and [C].

Compound [B] is Benzyl Alcohol. It has the molecular formula C7H8O. Upon oxidation, it gives back Benzaldehyde.

Compound [C] is Sodium Benzoate. It is the sodium salt of the acid and upon treatment with soda lime, it yields an aromatic hydrocarbon [D].

Compound [D] is Benzene. It is the aromatic hydrocarbon yielded from the treatment of Sodium Benzoate with soda lime.
