Solution

The motion of the particle is simple harmonic. In simple harmonic motion, the particle is at the extreme position at t = T/4 and t = 3T/4, where T is the time period.

Given, T = 8s. So, T/4 = 2s and 3T/4 = 6s.

In the first second (t = 1s), the particle moves from the mean position to some point towards the extreme position.

In the second second (t = 2s), the particle moves from that point to the extreme position.

Since the speed of the particle increases as it moves away from the mean position in simple harmonic motion, the distance covered in the second second is more than the distance covered in the first second.

Therefore, the ratio of the distance covered in the first second to the distance covered in the second second is less than 1.
