The presynaptic ending contains neurotransmitters, the synaptic cleft is a gap where neurotransmitters are released, and the postsynaptic ending contains receptors for these neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters: Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron (nerve cell) to another 'target' neuron. They are stored in synaptic vesicles at the presynaptic neuron. When an action potential reaches the presynaptic neuron, neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft. They then bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, triggering a response.
