Leela Seth is associated with framing the laws working on the domestic violence act. She was the first woman judge on the Delhi High Court and she was also the first woman to become Chief Justice of a state High Court, Himachal Pradesh. She was part of the three-member committee, which also included Justice J.S. Verma and Justice Gopal Subramanium, that was constituted after the horrific 2012 Delhi gang-rape case to suggest amendments to the criminal law to sternly deal with sexual assault cases. The committee's work led to the enactment of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, which widened the definition of rape and made punishment more stringent.
