  5. Cytokines such as Interleukin-2 (IL-2): These are a broad and loose category of small proteins that are important in cell signaling. Their role in the immune system is crucial, and they modulate the balance between humoral and cell-based immune responses.

These extracellular messengers bind to specific receptors on the cell surface, triggering a cascade of intracellular events leading to apoptosis.
