If a peer shared an article with you and you found that it was not from a peer-reviewed source, what would your approach be? I would make sure that the article does in fact not meet the assignment criteria and does not have appropriate verification.  Next I would describe the point we are trying to prove then ascertain which database we can use to find the appropriate articles.  Utilizing the Herzing library and google scholar will help find reputable peer reviewed articles.  If the article was not current, what would your approach be? Why is a basic understanding of evidence-based research appraisal important to nursing? Like anything in medical, all knowledge becomes obsolete or outdated.  In my nearly 10 years of healthcare I have seen numerous interventions fall out of fashion, fall back in to fashion and back out again.  Whichever data base we utilize needs to be from within the last 5 years or newer typically.  Finding up to date information is crucial for effective evidence based research.  Basing your research around outdated sources not only compromises your own understand and could potentially endanger a patient, it also opens yourself up to scrutiny and can create a culture of mistrust around your character.  Discuss how you would summarize your understanding of how to appraise evidence for your co-workers.  Being sure to do proper research beforehand is a big step for anyone looking to improve clinical practice.  Offering links to reputable sources so coworkers can verify for themselves that your studies are true is a great way to build trust.  Often times people will quote or use their favorite news source to verify their one sided arguments compromising the objective truth.  Offering up evidenced based data is a great way to build a stronger system that prioritizes facts over feelings.  Identification of a clinical question or area of interest prior to participation in a program is helpful, as it makes it easier for clinicians to quickly focus on their thinking about evidence-based decision making and applying the steps of EBP. Using clinicians’ PICOT questions and providing computers for interactive sessions while teaching searching skills is also effective.

How can you begin to incorporate evidence-based research into your nursing practice vs. "we have always done it that way"?

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an important aspect of healthcare.  All healthcare professionals' practice is based on EBP.  That includes nursing practice as well.  However, in order to decide on the validity of the research, it is important to critique. Every research includes a specific subject, a certain method of research, and analyze the data from the research.  Every research project has its own pros  and cons. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the research project, one can use the results efficiently into their practice.  Therefore, it is important to critique an evidence based article.
