Solution

To answer this question, we need to determine the height order of the friends based on the given information.

  1. L plays tennis and is taller than H and K. This means L is not the shortest but also not the tallest.
  2. The tallest one of them is a basketball player. Since L, K, and I don't play basketball, the basketball player can be either H, J, or M. But since J is the shortest, the basketball player must be M. So, M is the tallest.
  3. J, who is the shortest, plays volleyball. So, J is the shortest.
  4. L is positioned in between H and I in order of height and I is the football player. This means I is taller than L and H is shorter than L.

So, the order of height from tallest to shortest is: M (Basketball), I (Football), L (Tennis), H, K, J (Volleyball).

Therefore, the friend who will occupy the third place if the friends are to sit in descending order of their heights is L.
