Solution

To provide care for a responsive adult or child who is choking, follow these steps:

  1. Give 2 slow rescue breaths: Tilt the person's head back slightly and lift the chin. Pinch the person's nose closed and cover their mouth with yours, creating an airtight seal. Give two slow breaths, each lasting about 1 second, and watch for the chest to rise.

  2. Give back blows and abdominal thrusts: Stand behind the person and slightly to one side. Place one hand on the person's chest, slightly above the navel, and give up to five back blows with the heel of your other hand. If the obstruction is not cleared, perform abdominal thrusts. Stand behind the person, place your arms around their waist, and make a fist with one hand. Place the thumb side against the person's abdomen, slightly above the navel but below the ribcage. Grasp your fist with your other hand and give quick, inward and upward thrusts.

  3. Do a foreign object check/removal: After each set of back blows and abdominal thrusts, check the person's mouth for any visible obstructions. If you see an object, carefully remove it with your fingers.

  4. Lower the person to the floor and open the airway: If the person becomes unresponsive, carefully lower them to the floor. Open their airway by tilting their head back and lifting their chin. Check for breathing and provide CPR if necessary.

Remember, it is important to seek medical help immediately if the person continues to choke or if they become unresponsive.
