Solution

The reaction sequence is as follows:

  1. Benzyl alcohol on treatment with a copper-based catalyst undergoes dehydrogenation to form benzaldehyde. So, compound 'A' is benzaldehyde.

  2. Benzaldehyde on reaction with KOH undergoes Cannizzaro reaction (disproportionation) to give benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. So, compound 'B' is benzyl alcohol and compound 'C' is benzoic acid.

  3. Benzyl alcohol on oxidation with KMnO4-KOH gives benzoic acid. This confirms that compound 'C' is benzoic acid.

So, compounds 'A', 'B' and 'C' are benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid respectively.
