The Hawthorne Effect is: "People’s tendency to behave differently when they are being observed."

This term originated from a series of studies conducted at the Western Electric Hawthorne Works in Chicago in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The studies found that workers' productivity increased not as a consequence of actual changes in working conditions introduced by the plant's management, but because management demonstrated interest in them. The workers felt they were receiving attention and thus worked harder. This phenomenon is now referred to as the Hawthorne Effect.
