Solution

(a) (i) These two hydrocarbons are isomers because they have the same molecular formula but different structural formulas. They both have the formula C5H10, but the arrangement of atoms in the molecule is different.

(ii) Another isomer could be CH3CH2CH(CH3)CH2.

(b) (i) The product of the reaction between ethene and bromine is 1,2-dibromoethane. Its structural formula is CH2BrCH2Br.

(ii) The product of the reaction between propene and hydrogen is propane. Its structural formula is CH3CH2CH3.

(iii) The product of the reaction between but-1-ene and water is butan-2-ol. Its structural formula is CH3CH(OH)CH2CH3.
